Learning Objectives

  • Understand that odds encode both payout and probability
  • Learn the formula: Implied Probability = 1 / Decimal Odds
  • Recognize the three odds formats (decimal, fractional, American)
  • Understand that bookmaker odds include a margin above 100%

Quick Summary

  • → Odds encode probability: Implied Probability = 1 / Decimal Odds
  • → Low odds = high probability; high odds = low probability
  • → Three formats express the same thing in different ways
  • → Bookmaker odds always include a margin (105-110% total)

What Are Odds?

Odds are the language of sports markets. They tell you two things at once:

  1. How much you'll win if your prediction is correct
  2. How likely the market thinks the outcome is (implied probability)

Odds = Price = Probability

Every set of odds encodes a probability. Understanding this is the single most important skill in sports trading.

  • Low odds (e.g., 1.20) = high probability, small payout
  • High odds (e.g., 10.00) = low probability, large payout

The relationship is simple: Implied Probability = 1 / Decimal Odds

So odds of 2.00 imply a 50% probability. Odds of 4.00 imply 25%. Odds of 1.25 imply 80%.

The Three Formats

Odds are displayed in three common formats around the world:

  1. Decimal (Europe, Australia): 2.50 means you get 2.50x your stake back (including stake)
  2. Fractional (UK): 3/2 means you profit 3 for every 2 staked
  3. American (US): +150 means profit $150 on $100 stake; -200 means risk $200 to profit $100

All three express the same thing — they're just different languages for the same probability.

The Margin Inside the Odds

Bookmaker odds include a margin. If you convert all outcomes in a match to probabilities and add them up, you'll get more than 100% (typically 105-110%). That extra 5-10% is the bookmaker's edge.

Why This Matters

Every trading decision starts with understanding odds. If you can't read what the market is telling you, you can't identify when it's wrong. Master odds, and you master the foundation of everything that follows.

All odds formats encode the same probability in different conventions. Decimal shows total return; fractional shows profit-to-stake; American, Hong Kong, Malaysian, and Indonesian use +/− notation that flips at even money (2.00). The implied probability (1 ÷ odds) is the market's estimate — and the break-even win rate you must exceed to profit.

Knowledge Check

Question 1 of 2

What is the implied probability of odds 2.00?

Glossary

Decimal Odds

Total return per unit staked (e.g., 2.50 returns 2.50x your stake)

Implied Probability

The probability encoded in odds, calculated as 1 / decimal odds

Margin (Overround)

The excess above 100% when all outcomes' implied probabilities are summed
